A wonderful historical novel about how traditional midwifery gets "manhandled" out of the mainstream by modern obstetrics. A must read for all midwives, doulas, and natural childbirth enthusiasts. I read this while I was pregnant with my "blue moon baby." Has some great gems of traditional birthing wisdom as well and an awesome herbal glossary at the end of the book.

I found this book to be quite monotone. It was just interesting enough to finish, but had no "peaks". Did give nice perspective on life back then for women. Wouldn't recommend.

This book is beautifully written! She has the ability to make you feel as though you are walking right into Scots Bay and participating in their everyday life, experiencing what the characters are feeling and thinking. Not only does it tell a vivid story, it gives some insight into the history of early midwifery, smallcoast town living and women's rights.

The book was set in Nova Scotia during WWI. It is the story of how women looked after themselves during marriage and childbirth. A moving story of how women gradually took more control over their lives.

Really enjoyed this book - engaging story, well-written, and an interesting take on the medicine, feminism, and "women's work."

An interesting look at midwifery in the early 1900's, and the impact of Western Medicine on traditional ways.
