Super cute. Meg Cabot is just as addictive brain candy in her young adult/teen fiction as she is in her adult books. I just may have to borrow the follow-ups.

I'm so happy I read this book. It is way different from the movie. Not only are things like Mia's dad being alive and the grandma being kind of a weird, mean woman...but it's also more mature. Not quite what you'd expect from something that was made into a Disney movie. It's a really fun read.

"Surprise, darling. You're a princess." 14 year old Mia, who thinks she already has enough to worry about (flunking algebra, her mom going out with her algebra teacher, and other typical and not-so-typical teen problems) finds out that her father is actually the prince of a small European principality, Genovia. And that means...she's a princess. Yep. A princess. Thus begins a flurry of "Princess Lessons", taught by her dowager princess Grandmother, arguements with her father about how unjust it was to never tell her, body guards following her everywhere, fights with her somewhat crazy best friend, and, of course, boy troubles. Mia chronicles every second in her journal, giving you the somewhat guilty feeling while reading it that you're sneaking in your friend's diary. Let's face it, ladies. We eat this book up because it's about just about every girl's dream, complete with cute boys and pretty dresses. We're pathetic, really.

Good fun, dynamic, etc. but quite predictable, probably strike me as one of my "best ever" books. Too much of a "consumer's book" in my mind, I like to work through my books and think while I read. No need for this here. But certainly enough wit for a couple of evenings' entertainment.

Primeiro fui conquistada pelo filme, para depois não resistir à tentação de comprar o livro. Assim que comecei, fiquei intrigada com a avó - sua figura rude, autoritária e "fumante" ficou bem longe da elegância e realeza de Julie Andrews, que interpreta a rainha mãe nas telas de forma impecável e, porque não dizer, digna de uma rainha. Também, no início, senti falta de uma narrativa fora do diário (claro que influenciada pelo filme), mas só foi a trama se desenvolver para eu deixar me envolver e ficar ansiosa pela próxima página. Ainda mais com o amadurecimento de Mia, ao se descobrir princesa de Genóvia, e de sua própria narrativa, depois de perder e ganhar amores, enfrentar provas de álgebra e renovar o visual. Tenho que bater palmas ao livro por revelar todo o passado e convivência de Mia com seu pai. Sei que no filme o mote é "to cut a story short", mas esse gancho é imprescindível para entender a reação de Mia à carta deixada pelo seu pai no diário real. Já que se trata de uma adolescente, o começo de sua relação com Michael e o próprio fato de escrever tudo nas páginas de um diário me fez voltar à essa época inesquecível. Me vi em Mia - nos seus grilos normais de adolescente - com os olhos de uma mulher madura.
