What are readers saying about Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1)?

Urban fantasy is rapidly condensing into a full-blown genre, and Kim Harrison's spin on it is sufficiently original to serve as a benchmark for new entrants. In this series, the standard supernatural critters (vampires, werewolves, witches, etc) have come "out of the closet", and coexist semi-peacefully alongside humanity after a bio-terror apocalypse. Harrison's world-building is excellent, and she establishes a cast of interesting characters centered on Rachel Morgan, a witch cop who leaves the force to set up shop as a bounty hunter as a result of abuse from a really bad manager. While later books in the series are superior, the series as a whole is definitely worth checking out if you like urban fantasy or are a newly minted fan of "True Blood".

I'm hooked! An original story that left me guessing what was going to happen next. It had all types of paranormal characters, from witches to vampires to pixies and a few human ones too. Categorized as a horror book it was far more involved, containing humor and suspense. I can't wait to read the 2nd book. Great read!

Those looking for a contemporary fantasy that pushes magic and not werewolves or vampires, look here. The Were's and the vamps are present, but they aren't the focus. A witch is, and it's a great read!

My only complaint was that I felt sometimes that we had too much background information given to us, but hey - in fantasy, that's pretty much a given. Plus it does make for good fantasy fodder. :)

I was really skeptical when I picked up this book. I was running out of reading material and thought: what the hey! I planned to read the book casually, over the next couple days, but I finished it that night. Her world is delightful and her explanation for the peternaturals coming out of the woodworks is priceless (don't worry I won't spoil it for you.) Harrison is able to create characters that exist in a range of mind sets. Some are bad, some are good, and some are in between. What I have learned from reading her series is that nothing is as it may seem. What may be good could turn out bad. This book has a great way of surprising the reader and her writing is so casual that it flows through the mind like a breeze. I would definitely recommend this as a read.

This irst book in The Hollows series is a tad bit confusing, and I'd find myself reading paragraphs and not having understood the gist o what I'd read. In the books that follow Harrison does a wonderul job at explaining the world she has created, and unlike many books she never ceases to surprise me!

Kim Harrison's supernatural version of Earth is interesting and well thought out, and instantly loved the 3 main characters (Rachel, Jenks, and Ivy) who are all flawed but easy to relate to. This is a great series of books, and would recommend it to anyone who likes the supernatural sci-fi genre.

This isn't just a vampire novel, and it's not romance. But it is good!

When I first purchased this book, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about even starting it. The first few pages still didn't quite convice me of it's worth. But once the ball started rolling, I was completely taken in. Everything about this book is perfect. The amazing thing is, Kim Harrison has made everything up nearly from scratch. The way the characters speak. The swearing. The complicated magic system...and other supernatural characters. One more thing I'd like to mention--Kim Harrison writes like no other. She can make you sweat just reading about the tension between Rachel and Ivy...sometimes.

A witch named Rachel who quits her job as a runner is looking for a permanent way out of her contract. While believing she would do better off working for her own agency, she is befriended by a lusty non-practicing vampire named Ivy whose intentions seem questionable at times but keeps Rachel on her toes. Another character is a pixie named Jenks who begins to almost feel like a side-kick in this story. There is also Nick, a rather powerful addition who is human and knows the ways of magic. Of course, there are also the enemies such as Trent, a wicked councilman man who has had enough playing games and wants Rachel out of the picture for good.

The book was great, really entertaining and I loved the mix of sarcastic and cheesy humour throughout especially with Ivy and Rachel. There's a bit of subtle eroticism too between them which Kim writes about delicately. Jenks is a good character if not a little annoying at times but brings a loyalty to the story as he wants to keep Rachel alive. I also like how Kim Harrison has a strong grasp of blending in reality with the supernatural world.

Looking forward to reading more from this collection, as well as a few of the anthologies that include author Kelley Armstrong.

Entertaining and quirky, this is the best Supernatural series I have discovered since the Dresden Files and Kelley Armstrong. The heroine, Rachel Morgan, is an ex-bounty hunter, having left her previous employee, she's now got a bounty on her head. She lives in a refurbished church with a non-practicing vampire and her bodyguard is 4-inches tall. Morgan is sassy, pretty kick-arse and jolly good at surviving. Demons, vampires, weres, fairies, subterfuge, killer tomatoes and random acts of violence and shapeshifting - this story has it all. Seriously addictive. Reminds me of Evanovich meets Buffy on a dark nght. Excitingly enough, a customer informed me this was a great series but the first book wasn't so good. But I read it and totally loved it (even if she does keep calling a mink a rodent - it's a mustelid you fool!) and if it just gets better from herein, I'm in for the long ride!

This was a wierd book! I read about the first 75 pages & put it down. It was too confusing!
Kim Harrison is one of those authors that created her own world. Then she throws you in the middle of it, with all her terminology & creatures & places & doesn't explain anything! Now some authors can pull this off, and you get immersed in their world & like it. But this was hard to get into.
I actually went back to the book & finished it. It got better later, with more action. It even had some funny parts. I will probably read the next book to see what happens next. She left some story lines open.
It's about a future world, where witches, vampires, pixies, were-animals, etc, live along with humans. Rachel Morgan is a witch, who is also a bounty hunter. She works for a Security firm who deals with these creatures. But she is not happy with her job. So she quits & takes another bounty hunter with her. Her boss gets mad & puts a price on her head. Soon every kind of assassin is hunting her. Very imaginitive.

Fast-paced and action packed from page 1, this supernatural story about a witch, a vampire and a fairy who team up in their own private-investigation firm. The witch, Rachel, is the main character who is coming to terms with learning to love while fighting demons and often fighting for her life. My favorite character is Jenks, the fierce, fiesty, and drop dead gorgeous foul-mouthed fairy whose curses often refernce Tinkerbell's... well, you just have to read it. Addicting supernatural fun.

Loved it.. occult fantasy at it's finest with humor, love, tragedy, mystery all in one. Kim Harrison is my new fave author..
Sassy, funny, mysterious and a not so "horror-type" look into the Gothic world. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Read this in one day! Loved It.
Fun, sassy, mysterious and a not so "horrifying" look into the Gothic world. Great story.. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

This urban fantasy was a free download for my eBook, and it was a pretty entertaining read. I understand that this is the first in a series, and while I might be curious to pick up the next installment, I'm not an avid reader of the genre, so I won't be rushing out to get it. Still a quick/easy read if you're looking for one.

Excellent! I loved it!Rachel, without wanting to be, is one hell of a heroine, even if it's just her trying to keep herself from being killed. When she sets her sights on something, she doesn't back down; like a pitt bull that chomps down and won't let go. Tenacious and unrelenting, she does whatever she needs to do. I loved her attitude and personality, and I like the way she thinks.A nice mix of characters, good guys and bad guys. Jenks, Ivy, I like how they seem to fit with Rachel, although I still wonder what she's hiding from Rachel. And with Nick as well. He hasn't told her everything either. I can't wait to find out what's going on!I liked the plot, how it played out. The action was superb. I had a hard time putting it down. Just when you think, "okay, I'll finish this chapter and hit the sack," nope. Something happens and then you think, "okay, one more chapter." I'm actually glad that I didn't have to go to work today, LOL. I think the book would have kept me distracted, LOL!An excellent read. I found it a cross between Stephanie Plum and Anita Blake. If you like those series, this one's definitely up your alley.

I really liked this book. It's a very tongue in cheek mystery with vampires, witches, and were creatures thrown in.

For the most part, it's well written, but the one thing that just made me nuts was that she kept saying that a mink was a rodent. Minks are weasels. They're not even in the same order, never mind the same family!

Okay. I'm all better now. :)

Rachel Morgan quits more than her job when she stops working a runner for supernatural government agency - since no one leaves alive. So when her former partner, a vampire with major connections, asks her to live be her room mate, Rachel's lifeline starts to look stronger. But only at the outset ... This is a terrific first book that combines a female Dirty Harry with supernatural forces, a quest for identity and the need to find and bring down the bad guy.

This book is an interesting read. It combines various fantasy elements (vampires, witches, pixies, faeries, leprechauns and even demons) in an entirely new way. The action was fast paced and didn't bore me at all. The writing style was a little simplistic at times though and the story seemed to be missing parts at times. Sometimes the characters didn't have much depth to them and at other times they were as complex as real people. The variation was kind of disconcerting at times. I would recommend this book to people that like fantasy, but not before I recommended a few other series first.

I love this book so much I have reread it about 100 times. Kim Harrison has created the ultimate supernatural world, one that stared out just like ours-until the turn happened. Rachel Morgan, the main character, is a down to earth witch, living in the Hollows(An Inderlander community) fighting evil on a daily basis, and so much more!

I can't say enough good things about this series. Kim Harrison has created a rich world with wonderfully 3-dimensional characters. The good guys don't wear white and the bad guys are multi-layered, making them more sympathetic than your traditional black-hatted villians. If you enjoy urban fantasy/supernatural detective series, this is a must-have.

This book had the potential to be an excellent specimen in the supernatural genre, but just fell short, in my opinion. I felt like the author didn't have a clear idea of where she was going and added a lot of needless "filler" material just to give the book more pages. She has created a potentially excellent world that her characters live in, but unfortunately, none of them are very likable or well developed. I won't be wasting my time on the rest of the series.

Dead Witch Walking is an intriguing novel by the fantasy-author Kim Harrison. The protagonist in the book - a witch and bounty-hunter by the name of Rachel - gets far more than she bargains for when she chooses to quit her job. Suddenly she has a price on her head and apparently it's high because assassins are lining up by the second. If that wasn't enough for her to deal with, she's also hard at work at proving that the resident - and very much loved - Chairman Trent Kalamack is behind the forbidden Brimstone (drug) dealings. Maybe he even has his hands in worse business? Who knows? Rachel certainly wishes she didn't. Rachel lives her life in a world where half the human population was wiped out by a mutated virus found in a batch of gene-manipulated tomatoes. The supernatural beings - witches, werewolves, vampires, pixies and a lot more - decided that the outbreak of the virus was as good a time as any to reveal their existence. The death of half the human population and the sudden realisation that fairytales might have more than a little grain of truth in them was labeled as the Turn. Dead Witch Walking is the first book of many detailing the exciting life and jobs of Rachel and her band of friends. Most noteworthy are her two professional partners; The pixy Jenks and the living vampire Ivy. If Rachel isn't busy worrying about assassins she has even more to watch out for in the many amourous vampires hunting her step or the cunning deviousness of any possible demons she may tangle with. The book is definitly worth reading if you enjoy the fantasy genre, and even if the supernatural's not your usual cup of tea, you may be pleasently surprised by the many mysteries cropping up in the book.
