THIS BOOK is amazing..the poetry takes you off this dry stale world to some where so beautiful that i can't explain.....i wish they thought his work in school....maybe kids and adult wouldn't have such odd or off relationships.A MUST READ......even if you don't like readiing..u will once u open this book! if u guys want 2 borrow my book let me know!

Very good read, it was a pleasure to read while having lunch at Priya in Chico. Nice and light, but very thoughtful.

my sister says reading this was a running exclamation of "hey!! that's what I've been trying to say all thsi time!!!" it's awesome. put it in your bathroom. I cry every time I read 'Emptiness'. Rumi is a rockstar. I want to be someone's 'Shams' whenever I read Rumi. Doesn't feel like writings from the 13th century.

My favorite poet- a dreamer who speaks of love and romance as simply another facet of the Oneness of God in everything. His words challenge the reader to experience love as enlightenment, as a journey not to bond two separate beings, but one leading to the realization that what we seek outside ourselves is actually a reflection of what we hope to find within.

I never thought I would be into poetry....but, like the author says, Rumi is "a combination of Plato, Jesus and Shakespeare all in one.

Sufism is a word tossed around by Sunnis claiming to have any hold on the subject, but further inquiry reveals they don't consider it to be orthodox, with the celebration in dancing and singing and so on they don't think are halal practices. For them, it is outside the realm of Islam. In actuality, it pre-dated Islam but later merged with it in its own branch. The result, however, is something quite beautiful, and the poems here show this. I might even say the poetry is very sensual

This is one of those books you always keep by your side,even if you do not subscribe to the Sufi tradition of liberation through total submission. Book 4 of the Masnavi, considered by some to be the great ecstatic poem of the Universe, is here in its entirety. One needs to read it a first time all at once even without undertanding everything, then come back and absorb it slowly. It was not written down by Rumi rather recited and written down by disciples which accounts for it's rythm. Nowadays we are very exctited by Quantum Physics but the concept was very much alive in Rumi's mind 700 years ago and he was incredibly ahead of his time.

With a particularly dark cloud cast over the mainstream image of Muslim society today, it would behoove the typical person to try to understand the culture in a different way than as just a bunch of yodeling, bomb-toting towelheads; this book, one of the most "be excellent to each other" books I've read in a long while, comes from that same place where so many people believe so much violence spawns. Granted, the translator's a bit of a hippie, so that may also add to the peace and love vibe of the whole thing, but this is equal parts Gandhi, Buddha, and Zen. And it's all poetry. Cool, huh?
