Want to curl up in front of the fire with a good book about a boy and his dog, but have already read "Where the Red Fern Grows"? Pick up "Sounder" and grab your cocoa and bunny slippers.

"Sounder" is the story about a young boy and his dog. The boy's life is described, and his affection for his dog. Readers look into life in the boy's cabin, and we learn about his family. The boy's parents work to make ends meet and provide for their family. When the boy's father is accused of stealing a ham, he is sent to jail, and the boy visits him there, hurt by the cruelty of men. The boy's father tells him to not come back.

The father is soon sent from the jail and the boy journeys to locate him. The mission is long and exhausting, though he is supported by his mother and Sounder. Sounder is a source of friendship and comfort for the lonely boy, making the bittersweet reunion/tragedy that happens later all the more tender.

Sounder is a good read for both the young and old. The story, though simply written, is captivating enough to hold the interest of older readers, while still remaining simple enough for younger readers. I give "Sounder" a five out of five.

This was a surprising book. although I may be too old for it, I thought that the ending had a surprising maturity and morality. It is a real quick read and well worth a dollar at any used book store.

Brilliant in its simplicity, overarching in its themes, magnificent in its scope: it's THE ODYSSEY in the Old South, with Sounder as Argos, the frail dog that waits for his master's return, and the boy, like Telemachus, who seeks his lost father. A work for the ages that's based on a true story.
