I read this for a children's lit. class, and though I thought it was interesting, I was much more impressed with Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, which I began reading when I was halfway through Shade's Children. There are a lot of similarities between the stories (though not evident by the plot synopses), but I found Ender a much more sympathetic character. If you like Shade's Children, I recommend reading Ender's Game!

It has an amazing storyline from page one, well built up characters and the best length for me.Alot of swearing but not in terrible ways that it was innapropriate for children over 10 years old. Alot of parts about young children with the urges of sex and how an adult was twisting the minds of children to see to his own sickness. I would recommend this book to any adult (my mother), any teenager (my sister) or any child ( myself).

Possibly the most amazingly done story I have ever read, and the first book I ever read more than once. It has amazing characters and somehow makes what would seem fantasy, seem science fiction, and what would seem science fiction, reality. I found myself thinking and acting like characters weeks after reading it.

My favorite book I have ever read.

I like this book for a number of reasons the main one being one of the few stories that tries to tie up the area between fantasy and sci-fi another example being Armageddon's Children by Terry Brooks, his plot lines work and you can see the terror and evil or the overlords, the twist near the end is also quite nice.

Okay, call me childish, but I really enjoy teen fiction. One of the most exciting authors in this area at the moment is Garth Nix. Oz born, he seem to have a knack for creating beleivable alternate realities which he never tries to hard to explain - it's up to you imagination to accept.

Shade's Children is probably his strongest book in recent times - as good as Sabriel. It's a darker book, with strong adult and teen themes. It's a little lacking in depth or description, but it's compelling and gripping. I love how he treats difficult subjects like sex and education with such a pragmatic approach, and how he dares to address them in a mature way, rather than skirting round very obvious issues.

Character development is also very strong, with the central characters described from a third (actually forth) person perspective. He also uses short video and transcripts from yet another point of view (in much the same way as Ender's Game) to add an element of fear and suspense, which ultimate is very rewarding.

Overall, I think there are very few Sci-Fi authors, adult or otherwise, who can hold a candle to Nix at his best.

I absolutely love Garth Nix's writing. He's my favorite author of all time, and while this isn't my favorite of his works, it's still very much worth reading. Excellent as always, Garth Nix delivers another wonderful world of turmoil, adventure, and heroics.

Read this in grade 9 for a book report, analyzed every shred of it and realized that there were still so much to talk about. The plot is very unique, yet believable at the rate humanity is progressing. While the character don't show too much development over the course of the book, each of their stories are still heart-wrenching and ... sad. The inserts are a GREAT source of information.

Garth Nix is a great writer, and in this short story manages to inject a lot of emotion and drama. It's a pretty good read.

The world has been taken over by Overlords. The few people left on earth are children; and they are slowly being captured and taken to meat factories. Their organs and muscles are harvested to make humanoid creatures that are made to fight an endless and senseless war.

I found this book to be disapointing from Nix's other work. It wasn't a bad story, but it just didn't catch my interest and certain elements got me confused.

It was a decent read. The whole thing could have used more explanation (maybe my imagination just isn't strong enough). It ended too abruptly. The characters were well written, and plausible. Worth reading for sure.

Easy read yet hard to read. Visualizing the apocolyptic world portrayed in this novel and relating to the charecters is suprisingly natural, but I worried about Gold-eye, Drum, and Ella the entire time! Expect to be kept on edge.
