a great study in how a young boy grows up learning valuable lessons. Also about how his father teaches him responsibility and tough life lessons by giving him "gifts" with strings attached.

When I first began I hated this book. I found it childish, Jody was unsympathestic to me as were Billy Buck and especially Carl but when I reached the end of the first story i was hooked. Steinberg really has an insight into the human mind. They are moving, sad, incisive, insightful and just wonderful. I see why he won the Nobel Prize now.
