The Rainbow is set in the east midlands of the UK at the turn on the 20th century, and tells the trials and tribulations of the Brangwen family over three generations. It was deemed an obscene publication in 1915 and all copies were seized and burnt. The book was not available again in Britain for 11 years. Since then, of course, its content has become a little tame by modern standards. Nevertheless, Lawrence's treatment of sexual desire and the power plays within relationships makes for interesting reading. If I have one criticism, the prose is overly elaborate at times, to the point where it can become quite repetitive and the reader can become disengaged. In my case, I 'read' the book as a Librivox audiobook while cycling to work. Sometimes, I arrived at my destination and realised I hadn't been listening, but I could still follow the plot. In this regard, maybe the book could have been a bit shorter and not lost any its value.

I read this one because I liked Lawrence's short stories and poems that I had read previously. I was less impressed by what many consider to be his best novel. There were moments of brilliant poetic imagery and phrasing and other moments that seemed to drag on forever without ever coming to the point. The scandalous parts weren't remotely scandalous by today's standards and were, if fact rather tame and boring. I think lawrence could have edited out several chapters worth of material to tighten things up a bit, but otherwise the storyline was decent.

Another uni book I never got round to finishing but one of my favourites out of what we had to study. Incredibly long but interesting story of the generations of one family and their loves and losses.
