Scholarly read, comparative literature mixed with cultural anthropology. But one volume in Campbell's seminal work.

Deals with the broad mythic themes of the Oriental world. The image of the meditating human with eyes closed to the pain and suffering of the world (the Jainist/Hindu) as contrasted with the mythic archetype of the meditating individual with the eyes open, affirming that all is well and the cosmic order maintains (the Japanese/Chinese mythic structure).

Dry but very as in-depth as you would expect from the author. The comparisons and contrast of Hinduism/ Buddhism/ Confucianism/ Shinto etc. from ancient to modern times were very interesting & informative especially when made aware of their historical and thematic commonalities.
An interesting examination of the origins of trends within eastern religions & myth structures from prehistory until modern times - as a comparative exploration alone it is well worth the read.

This is an awsome book that will answer so many questions about things that you never even thought to ask but are deeply interwoven into our everyday life from ideas that are five to six thousand years old.

I learned so much about the ancient, interconnected roots of Eastern religions. I love this series (Masks of the Gods) and highly recommend it to anyone interested in comparative mythology/religion.
Great series. Learned so much from this one.

This is a highly effective and secular summation of the Shad Darshana and allied philosophical, spiritual and mythis eastern thought. Bits such as that elaborating the structure of the Japanese tea ceremony are truly enlightening.

Part Two of the Masks of God series, this book covers mythologies east of the Middle East, starting with Babylonian and Egyptian myth, then tracing their progress east to India, China, and Japan. The latter two chapters (China and Japan) are given less space and feel rather superficial compared to the in depth coverage of Egypt and India, but by that time, Campbell has made his point, and doesn't need to be exhaustive. You should read Vol 1: Primitive Mythology first, but alone, this provides an excellent overview of Eastern ways of thought, from an anthropological/mythological (rather than religious) viewpoint. Campbell's writing is academic, but lively enough that it never FEELS academic.
