Helen Fielding is a brilliant writer! I laughed out loud all the way through this book and the sequel, "The Edge of Reason". Wonderful book. Bridget is lovely, and totally engaging. Daniel is...well, Daniel. And of course Mark Darcy is gorgeous...both in the book and on the screen in the form of one Colin Firth...there I said his name without sighing...how is that possible? I mean...he is COLIN FIRTH!

For those who don't know the story, Bridget is everywoman... she is all of us who are less than perfect, with a less than perfect figure, less than perfect hair, or fashion sense...but she is delightful in her uniqueness...as we all are.

Bascially, the moral of the story is be yourself and Colin Firth... I mean Mark Darcy will fall in love with you. Okay, so maybe that doesn't happen in real life, but it sure is fun to read about it and dream it could happen. Go Bridge!

One of those beach reads when you don't really need to concentrate - light and fluffy, cute, funny.

This was my first Chick Lit book I ever read years ago. Before that I was reading YA or anything for school. I fell in love the humor and honesty of being a woman searching for a job and love. While I didn't believe that a woman in her 30's would be in her situation and that her life would be settled by then I am now at that age and realize that nothing is ever settled in a nice neat package. I think Fielding is a terrific writer of this genre. Most describe these as fun, light easy reads for the beach...and that is exactly what I need to get away from every day life.

This book is hilariously funny, not to mention absolutely mortifying for any woman to read. Even as you judge Bridget for every stupid, silly, unreasonable thing she does, you can't help but realize you've done the same thing, and probably not once. It's a brilliantly astute look at a life of a single, wonderfully average and ludicrously strange woman. Funny, fast, touching. I especially enjoy the parallels and allusions to Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my favourite books.

Everyone should know that the 1st Bridget Jones is suppose to mirror Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Following the same idea this on mirrors Austen's Persuasion (which is one of my favorite of her novels). One would think that it being "chick lit" there would be as much depth as a piece of paper, however it is a very astute picture of our modern culture in general through doubling over in laughter.

I think this book would have been better if it did not have tons of F bombs in it. Other than that it was a funny story!

I didn’t like this book all that much. About halfway through the book it finally started to pick up a little. The style of writing was really annoying me. The fact that she would leave out articles and words in order to make things shorter and how very and very good become v. and v.g. It really got on my nerves. I can understand it’s supposed to be a diary. But I’ve written many personal journals, read many fictional and non-fictional diarires. No one writes like that!!!
Another thing that got annoying is how she kept thinking about Daniel. How much she liked him and wanted him and thought he’d changed when you know that he’s still an ass. I mean, I understand that it was all about her changing herself and how she finally became confident in herself at the end. I can totally understand that. I guess it’s just how the author went about getting to that point.

There were times I could really understand what Bridget was going through. Especially with her mom. But there are other times I was going “What the hell are you thinking?!” aside from the whole Daniel thing. Mainly it was her eating habits. Granted, I just lost a decent amount of weight by counting calories. But I never ate as much as she did on her high days. I just can’t understand how someone can eat so much in one day. So that probably didn’t help with trying to sympathize with the character.

I’m glad I read it, but it's probably not remaining on my shelves.

Again, I enjoyed this. Probably much more than I'd have enjoyed it prior to living in England and picking up on the local vernacular. Knwoing the exact meaning behind the things she says really enhanced it for me, especially since I wasn't constantly marking text to go back and look up things later. Actually I think I enjoyed this book as much as the first. Funny, very funny. The only thing that spoiled it a bit is the fact that I'd already seen the films. I do prefer to read a book and then see the film. That said, I will rewatch the second film as soon as I am able. I watched the original film years ago when it was released and again just after moving here.
Somehow I missed that this was actually a book, written as a diary; I formerly was only aware of it as a movie. I saw the movie years ago, probably not long after it was released. I watched the movie again fall of 2008, even saw the sequel.

First time through the film I know I understood very little of what was said. Last year when I watched it I understood almost all of it, having lived here for a year.

I only decided to read the book because I saw it on a list of 'Have you read' books recently. Really, I am still not sure how it became a part of the list. There was nothing especially special about the book. It appears to follow along much as the movie did. Of course I am going to have to rewatch the movie at some point, I guess, to determine if I am recalling that correctly. While it wasn't a life-changing book for me to read I will probalby also read the sequel so that I can say that I read both books and saw both films.

The sequel to Bridget Jones' Diary.

This one is also funny, but not as good as the original. Bridget and Mark are a happy couple, but they are driven apart by Bridget's addiction to self-help books and the machinations of sneaky Rebecca, who tries to steal Mark away. A few misunderstandings later, the couple breaks up and Bridget is off on a "fabulous" adventure in Thailand. Once there, she is thrown into prison where she is eventually rescued once again by sweet Mark.

It doesn't happen often, but I have to admit I liked the movie better than the book.

i watched the movie first, read the book later. honestly, if i had wanted a blow-by-blow account of what it's like to have a tacitly accepted mild eating disorder, i would have watched E! for the 10 hours it took to read this book. it would have been just as mind-numbing. on the up side, it was sometimes quite funny. but you can't really credit the author too much, after all, she is english.

i laughed so much reading this absolutely funny n witty book ..its true I have never laughed so hard reading as I did during Helen Fielding's take on society, single women, married women, men and when moms sometimes give u embarrassing moments..i'm sure most of us women feel like Bridget in some things n no one could come out of this book not loving Bridget, Mark Darcy, Shaz, Jude, Tom n of course Daniel... the best part of it all is Bridget's such funny and insane theories in life like of how she could have gained weight overnight... "maybe food could react chemically with other food, double its density and volume and solidify into even more denser and heavier hard fat?" n like whenevr things start getting out of control repeating the phrase "inner poise" , use of the word fuckwittage - the mindgames men play .. happily shouting "hurray for singletons" because single girls hav their own incomes n homes, hav lots of fun n they dont need to wash someone else's socks n how the smug married make the singletons feel stupid cause they r jealous of thm...n thn how the very next day its marvellous having a boyfriend too..Thank you, Helen Fielding, you are a marvel.. Just thinking of Bridget makes me laugh out loud!!! Love Bridget n Renee Zellweger!!

Witty and funny, but Bridget Jones' character was too annoying for words. I am probably the clumsiest person in the world, but my faults do not compare to that of this main character. I felt her ignorance was a little over-done and her lack of suave was much over-played. Still a cute little "Pride and Prejudice" type of story, and I'd still recommend it as a quick and easy read.
Bridget Jones is as endearing in this book as Rennee Zellweger is annoying in the film. Miss Jones is not as irritating in the book as on film, and far more intelligent. I recommend the book, but not the film.

Overall it's a pretty funny example of chick-lit and better quality than some others I've read, but I got really irritated by Bridget's continuous whining about her weight, especially considering she's actually pretty skinny, assuming she's average height.

This book is hilarious and I laughed out loud several times. It made me forget the world out there for several hours.

I loved Bridget's self-deprecation and the bits about the feminist rants with Shazzer, Jude and Tom. The passages about Bridget's mom are wonderful, as they show how a 30-something woman is transformed in a helpless child instantly. Daniel Cleave is really a horrible person and I wish he had had a more cruel end. I am glad though that Bridget found Prince Charming at the end, most of all because the beginning was not promising.
