Espionage, moral struggles, with a great twist at the end - classic Greene stuff. And yes, plus his excellent prose. Not his best work, but an intelligent thriller nevertheless.

After reading Brighton Rock, I had higher expectations. The book is 2 short stories, the first one is rather political and complex in the setting post war Venice. The latter reminds me of a book that Hartley wrote. The morals of an illicit affairs and young innocents finding out about it.

Hmm ... I tend to disagree with the Facebook consensus around this book. True, it is a draft of the screenplay Greene would later write for the film; and also true, the film is better. Greene agreed on this point. But only a little better, I'd say. The book is, I think, quite wondfully executed, with a good choice of narrator, a steady sense of humor, and of course, a terrific little story. This isn't Greene's best book (read "The Quiet American," everyone -- now), but it's a charming novella, and it even captures a few sequences better than the movie does; I'm thinking especially of the arugment about Zane Gray. Try it. If nothing else, it's short.

Ingen bok som jag för evigt och alltid kommer att bära högt i minnet, men ändå en gott skriven berättelse som nog gjorde sig bra på film. det var ju också ett omskrivet filmmanus vilket tydligt lyste igenom.Underhållande, visst - lysande, tveksamt.

After reading the end of the affair I was looking forward to this book. It was good but did take more concentration to keep track of the characters.

This was a great read, even only at 134 pages. Full of mystery, it cleverly delves into the heart of the black market right after the war. The film is just as good.

I love graham greene but this is not his best. Watch the fim instead or read the book first then you'll appreciate the film !

This comic novella is more than a hard-boiled thriller. It challenges the reader's assumption of what 'artful' writing really is. The passage where a group of 'writerly' patrons mistake our hero for a much heralded 'modernist'author is genius. I often had my advanced English students read this story and would always ask them, "Who is the Third Man?" For those that think is just some dime-store-in-its-day beach read, I pose this same question. I would put Graham Greene in the same company as William Golding, George Orwell, and Anthony Burgess.
