I must admit, that I was a bit disappointed when recently rereading this novel. I appreciate Nesbit's humor, and the book is very sweet, but nearly too cute, and I miss the “fantastic†elements from many of her other stories. I am a Nesbit fan, and I am not discouraging people from reading this book, but rather encouraging people to pick up “Five Children and It†first!

A cute children's story. I read this for a senior-level literature course on E. Nesbit. A fascinating study in women's writing in Edwardian England, if you're into that kind of thing. If not, it makes a good read-to book for kids.

Fun children's book. Of all Nesbit's books I've read, this one has the most powerful emotional payoff at the end. Its climax is wonderfully joyous. I'd highly recommend it to everyone - of all ages.

This is a classic children's book I truly grew up with. I still have the copy I had as a child sitting on my shelf and is one of the few children's books that I pick up once every year to re-read. The book is falling apart and the pages yellowed with age but I love it all the more for it. Every year that goes by brings a different emotion as I read it. A story about 3 children who suddenly lose their father and move from their comfortable city home to a small country cottage by the railway. We journey with them as they grow accustomed to their new life and make friends at the railway station. It is a story that delves deeply into very adult issues like pride, honour, prejudice, loyalty and justice, but seen from the eyes of a child. A very subtle brilliance and therefore a great read for all ages!
