 A really well researched and interesting children's book that touches on the Underground Railroad, and deals directly with the industrial textile mills in Lowell Mass.

 I read this a long time ago, but I remember that it's really good. You grow to love the main character.

 I remember the feeling I had at the exact moment I first set eyes on this book at a school book fair as a kid. I wasn't sure if I had the money for it or not, and I put it back several times for that very reason. But something about it spoke to me, so I did without some of my usual sweets at lunch that day to purchase it... and boy am I glad I did. This book fed my soul more than that candy ever could have.

Does anyone remember that line Meg Ryan has in "You've Got Mail"?
When Joe Fox comes into (Meg Ryan's character) Kathleen's bookstore with Matt and Annabelle, he and Kathleen have a conversation at the counter? In that conversation Kathleen says, "... because when you read a book as a child it becomes part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does..."

This... THIS was that book for me. Lyddie was my literary childhood heroine. She reminded me a lot of the stories my relatives told me about my mother as a child. So, it was easy to imagine being like Lyddie.
No... I was Lyddie... becoming her more and more with every turn of every page.

I could feel it every time her heart broke. I understood every time she was afraid. I could relate to her being stubborn about somethings and uncertain about others. I knew exactly how she felt about her self-image. I knew why she wasn't eager to trust somethings that might have made her happy. I knew why she continued to hope... for something... in spite of whatever odds.

I felt...
* in awe of her strength of character,
* amazed by her unfailing dependability,
* impressed by her ability to adapt to things so quickly,
* empowered by her courage,
* enlightened by her ability to be so decisive,
* compassion for her grace under pressure,
* proud of her abillity to learn in spite of ridicule.

Her desire to make a better life for herself and her family is something that really struck a chord. Don't we all want better for our families and ourselves?

I cannot tell you how many times I have read this book... I'm still reading it.
The paperback version I own has a painted cover, and I swear that, even now, I can still see myself reflected in Lyddie's eyes... this acrylic Lyddie who looks so much like me. She challenges me from that cover to be more... the more that I want to be.

Well done, Katherine Paterson... well done.
