We read this for freshman english, and I absolutely loved it. Even though it was written a "few" years ago, it can still relate to people this day in age.

The Outsiders is virtually required reading in middle schools these days and little wonder. It’s a tale of school cliques (primarily the Greasers and the Socs (Socials)) and teen anxiety, with the underlying theme that if we only took time to know each other those in the “other” group are a lot like us. Virtually all of the teens in the book seem to come from families without parents: either literally gone (the narrator, Ponyboy’s are recently deceased) or totally unconcerned about their children (Johnny’s parents). The kids become their own families. Everything in the book is heightened from most, through not all, kids’ reality: violence, death, heroism, love and loss. The very end of the tale embodies every English teacher’s dream come true.

For those of us from an older generation, The Outsiders, brings up many of the themes of West Side Story.

This is the story of the greasers and the Socs, the two social groups in the boys' town. The greasers are kind of a family of friends, because for most of them all they have is each other. The Socs are more violent and like to fight. They are the rich kids who have things that the greasers can only dream of. They fight every once in a while -- but one night someone takes it too far.

From that point on the story surrounds the two boys who are on the run from the "fuzz" (police). The story is told from the viewpoint of Ponyboy Curtis, who is a fourteen-year-old greaser. He has two brothers, Darry Curtis and Sodapop Curtis. Their parents were killed a few years back, but the courts let them stay together as long as they stayed out of trouble.

This book is about so much more than the cliché of popular boys vs. loser boys. There are feelings and characters that you want to see succeed. That's what makes this book different from all the others, in a good way of course.

I liked that the characters seemed so real, like you really knew them! I love it when a book is like that. There are internal conflicts with many of the characters as well as the good vs. evil aspect. Everyone in eighth grade should be required to read this book!

Where to begin... This book is... Superb. There is absolutely no other word for it. The depth of these characters, the plot that, with every page seemed to thicken. Such a young girl was able to capture the tough life of a Greaser, and the easy life of the Socs. She really did make the balance between rich and poor clear. But she also topped it with a morale and it was summarized in one quote ; "Things are rough all over." If you haven't read this book it is definitely worth the time. You just can't achieve in a movie what you can in a book.

A high school reading assignment that helped me form a more clear vision of who I was at that time of my life. About as interesting as reading about one of your friends or enemies.
