This is the first of the Bronte sisters books that I truely enjoyed. Some say that this is a feminist book, but I just found it and interesting story of one abused woman who fought back to save her child.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys period novels. The writting is easy to fall into and the story will surprise you in it's honesty and description of the biasis against women and hidden behaviors of the time.

For the longest time I avoided reading this book, thinking it would not compare with Jane Eyre. What a mistaken assumption that was, this book is amazing. Anne's style is very different from her sister's but it's just as good, you become so absorbed in Helen's story and you really can feel her pain and despair through Anne's words. Great book, too bad Anne Bronte didn't live long enough to write many books.

Much more enjoyable than I expected. How could anyone ever have believed it was written by a man?

Very, very good. I can see why it is a classic. The story got going straight away, which was good, because sometimes classics are a bit slow to get started. I was gripped all the way through. I liked it how Mr Huntingdon didn't just convieniently die, and even when he did, Helen and Gilbert still had to work to get together.

Having read and enjoyed Emily B's Wuthering Heights and Charlotte B's Jane Eyre, I decided to complete the trifecta and read Anne B's Tenant. It's inevitable, if unfair, to compare the sisters' work, but here goes: I found that Anne proved to be the Lepidus of the Bronte triumvirate (note: this is not a compliment). The book was sturdy enough, though deeply flawed, and nowhere near as accomplished and memorable as the work her siblings produced. Like Wuthering Heights, this novel has a frame tale: a bumbling narrator who gets everything wrong. In WH, a more reliable narrator takes the reins after 40 or so pages, but in Tenant, the goofy Gilbert Markham rambles on for 125 pages, by which point I had nearly given up. Finally, the "real" narrator takes over, and the book reveals itself to be the story of a woman trapped in an ugly loveless marriage and her attempt to escape. This part was riveting, but unfortunately Gilbert returns for the final 100 pages, which was a bit of a jolt, as I had forgotten he existed. Since the middle section is entirely self-contained, the book would have been mightily improved if the frame tale was cut out altogether.

Very enjoyable. Could have done with some editing of the more repetitious parts--we get the hubby was debauched. This has inspired me to read "Agnes Grey". (I read this for free on my Kindle).

I like this Bronte sister's writing! Many of the characters actually have redeeming qualities about them that make it worth reading. And this was a good story!
