A personal favourite because it ticks all the boxes for a 19th century novel, yet it's beautifully subdued and full of emotion. Not as predicatble as most of its contemporaries. If you like Austen and Brontes, it is highly recommended.

This wasn't quite as good as I'd expected it to be, but it is one of the less well known Bronte novels. The main character, Lucy, seemed to be miserable most of the time and didn't really make an effort to have any fun. The end is very ambiguous as well.

This one grows on you. It has to -- difficult to read heroine, a raffish cad, a passionate and difficult master, the polite society versus the longing of the heart. A more mature, bittersweet take on romance and realism than Jane Eyre.

I am very conflicted on how I feel about this book. I very much enjoyed the book, the plot and the relationships between the characters, and I liked the mystery. But the ending and its ambiguity really ruined it for me; the ending almost makes Villette not worth reading

This book was picked up almost like an afterthought. The title was unfamiliar to me; and the story did not seem interesting- initially. The first reading was tough, especially since it required me to flip to and fro to decipher the French phrases.. but gradually I grew to love the story, particularly the story of romance between the author (herself) and the gruff, lonely teacher. This is, too, a story of independence and strength- of a woman surviving on her own in a foreign land.

There are about 100 pages or so of a satisfying novel in here. M. Paul was an interesting character to read, but I didn't like the protagonist as much as I would have liked and I didn't care much for the substantial portion of the novel dedicated to Dr. John, Ginevra, Polly and co. In the end I came away rather disappointed. The frequency of Victorian plot coincidences and overall meandering quality of the book had me skipping several large sections
