I read this book non-stop from cover to cover. Ann Radcliffe uses her words as the stroke of a paint brush. Great story. Intrigue, seduction, murder, romance - it has it all!

boring! I couldnt stand it anymore and left on page 380 and very little happened til than, and almost nothing scary, except for long speeches about nature in b-grade writing. The heroine is irritatingly obedient.

A long story, but strangely engrossing. Sometimes the descriptions and personal thoughts can get tedious, but I still had a strong desire to figure out the end.

One of the worst books ever, but worth reading as a study. It's good to know what Jane Austen was ridiculing when she wrote Northanger Abbey ...

This book is awesome. Ok yes it has long sections describing scenery and the main character, Emily, is subject to faintings, which some people may think annoying...but after the first 100 pages the plot thickens ALOT! There are many a mystery at not just the castle of Udolpho but another mansion as well, and the intrigue and emotional highs and lows of the characters kept my on my toes till the very end. The dark castle with the ghosts and bad-guys and romances---I was so into this book. It is hailed as the "first Gothic-novel," and influenced a whole genre. Well done Ann Racliffe.

This is a typical Gothic novel. Lots of crying, fainting, screaming, silly "I'm breaking the door down...here I go", personal thoughts and ramblings but tottaly worth the read! I think that all readers need to experiance all literature and this is one book that should be experianced!

Love Jane Austen? Ann Radcliffe was a huge gothis influence of novels of her day. Remember the references in Northanger Abbey? I loved this massive tome with lovely morality lessons. But, I have to admit I skipped the endless sonnets ;-)

I love hearing this book mentioned by other classic writers referring to Gothic literature. The story is still gripping and holds the reader. It remains timeless. You notice how the older books can pull you in and keep you immersed through 800 pages. It's like moving in with them for a while.

Wonderful gothic romance where everything goes wrong for the poor heroine and the damp castles and windy nights camping in forests leave you longing to spend more time shivering in dangerous situations. Wonderful descriptions of northern Italy and the south of France make this book even more epic in my estimation.

This is one of the worst books ever written. I only put up with all 6 hundred something pages because Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen, refers heavily to this book and I wanted to get all of the inside jokes. Ann Radcliffe can jump out of her casements and land with a splat on the sublime sublimity of the mountains of Udolpho, and I hope she takes her awful plotholes with her.

I was curious to read this book because of Jane Austen's delightful parody Northanger Abbey but I suppose my expectations were too high. The book is overlong and badly written. The only interesting thing about it is the popularity it generated during its time.

The lead character in Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" was enthralled by this gothic novel and I, too, decided I must read it. The introduction is an entire chapter and a half itself--don't read it unless you want some of the book spoiled for you. I bought the book knowing nothing about it except what Jane Austen had shared and was disappointed when the introduction revealed so much. I've just started reading this so I don't have any commentary on the book itself to share thus far.

First of all, this book is not easy to read in the usual course of novels. It requires concentration and a good knowledge of the English language. Secondly, it's a very intriguing and impelling story. Usually I'm able to finish books in one day, but due to the magnitude and scope of this story, I like to finish this one in smaller bits. I come back to the story again and again, only to find that I'm just as interested as I was when I put the book down initially. While at times the slightly annoyingly virtuous sentiment of the story can be oft-putting in large doses, it is refreshing in a sense that this book highly suggests mind over matter, rather than the usual emotional excesses of Romantic Gothic fiction. Quite different in this way from the typical Gothic novel, which makes it interesting. Not my personal choice, per se, but interesting and appealing to those who place value on logic and reason as well as the emotions.(By the way, this Dover "thrift" edition is rather handsome for a bargain-type book. I also have "The Monk" in addition to "The Mysteries of Udolpho.")
