Once again, Shaw has created a masterpiece! Saint Joan is, of course, about Jean d'Arc but with a twist. The play focuses less on her achievements than the attitude of the church who determined to burn her as a heretic. That is not to say that the church figures are demonic, just human and far less holy (by modern standards) than they imagine themselves to be. Shaw uses the humanity of his characters to ask the final question, to which both Joan's allies and enemies give a resounding 'no'. What the question is, you should read/see to find out.
