Still a classic, I like its predecessor more but the Sign of Four features a mystery that is rather unforgettable. Many of the stories by Doyle seem cliche, one has to remember that he was one of the first and therefore exempt from such judgment.

Sherlock Holmes! I first got into him as a kid, when my parents bought a "Baskervilles" audiotape. The dog-howling sounds scared the shit out of me.Fast forward a few years and I'm reading "The Sign of Four" for my literature class (19th century module), and I'm enjoying Sherlock like crazy. Reminds me of my childhood, still. No shit, Sherlock!

The best Conan Doyle story...for it has an Indian twist.

I guess I'm not one for an English Criminal Novel. It was my second Sherlock Holmes and it was not as satisfying as I thought it would be. I found myself skipping a lot of pages in the end. The arrogance of Sherlock Holmes was really getting on my nerves as was the fact that the reader has no chance whatsoever to solve the mystery herself. For me the book was below average, but maybe I'm just not into it?

Very easy to read. Nothing out of the ordinary and at times seemed to be very juvenile and not for adults.

A good book. Not as good as A STUDY IN SCARLET but still good. Some parts were long and unnecessary.

A great read, not quite up to the standard of Hound, but the chase up the river is one of Conan Doyles finest pieces of action writing. Great closing paragraph as well.

Would have given this a five if not for the rambling "story within a story" Which Conan Doyle uses to explain away the murder. A very clumsy device which spoils an otherwise great read.

I don't know if this is my version or not, but I have a wonderful complete Oxford set of the Holmes stories and novels, and it rocks. The only quibble I have about it (although from the few other editions I've read, this is a problem with all of them) is that sometimes annotations from the first paragraph of a story will feature a line like, "This clue relates to [PRODUCT X], which Conan Doyle's contemporary readers would have understood, but which becomes an interesting pun when you reach THE END and CHARACTER Y confesses to the murder."
