Lots of war and not so much peace. I read this bit by bit on public transit, twice daily every weekday, to and from work (around 45 minutes at a time) and it took several months to complete. Disappointing, I thought. Plus, the way that the Russians all call each other by first, last, and several middle names, while speaking to each other-- and they do this EVERY TIME that they say anything to each other (only slight exaggeration, there) makes it a dreary read.

So much to say... To be brief, if you are looking for a love story, you wll probably not get what you want; if you seek a discourse on history, war and humanity, you will be delightfully surprised. I must say this is such a men's book - I like most of the male characters, Andrew, Pierre, etc - my favorite being general Kutuzov... but the females disappoint me so much. The cunning one, Helene, has to die; the enchantess, Natasha, grows into a submissive stout wifey; the priestess, Mary, of course, continues her God-fearing life... To be honest, my values do not rupture far from 19th century morality, but I wrestle much with certain "fundamentalist" Christian ideals. The secular Japanese comic version, 円舞曲は白いドレスで/白木蘭円舞曲, has a much more interesting theme - women are strong creatures; they outlive several husbands and still have happiness.

This is supposed to be the best novel ever written. Oh MY GOD NO!!! It has some merit don't get me wrong. But it is really long and really slow
