The Oedipus cycle is life changing. The best tragedies, no wonder Aristotle named Oedipus Rex as the best model tragedy.

I LOVE all Greek mythology. And I just thought these stories were hilarious and sparked great arguments about the roles of fate

The best known of Sophocles plays, are the 3 which tell the tragic story of Oedipus and his family, cursed by fate. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus as King of Thebes, investigates the murder of his predecessor King Laius in order to remove a curse from his city, but in so doing uncovers the terrible truth about himself and his past. In Oedipus Colonae, Oedipus, now an old man, driven from Thebes and reduced to begging, is granted sanctuary with his daughers at last by Theseus, King of Athens, just as his sons are about to begin their war over Thebes (the "Seven Against Thebes" war), each wishing the blessing of the father they have rejected. The final play (although it was written and performed long before Sophocles wrote the other two) is Antigone, in which Oedipus daughter, following her brothers' deaths in the conflict of the Seven Against Thebes, sets out to bury Polynices in defiance of an edict from their uncle Creon (now King of Thebes) that he is to remain unburied.

It's a very twisted story about Oedipus the King and the tragedies that he and his family go through.

It was definitely not a book that I would normally read, but it is interesting.

The first book "Antigont" is more like a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Antigone's unrelenting love for her brother causes her to commit a crime by burying him beneath the earth, against the wishes of the king.

The second book, "Oedipus the King" takes place before "Antigone" and follows the story of Oedipus trying to avert the disasters fortold by the greek gods, only to find out that the prophecies have already been fulfilled by himself.

I like it better than The Orestia...my favorite is Antigone...kind of like Romeo and Juliet in a way.
