Brilliant insight into the state of Siberian labor camps in the late 1800's, but so much more, artistic and revealing. It's an illuminating view of the human condition and psyche.

Great, loosely based on his own time in the Gulags.

A thorough description of the life of a sensible, intellectually well-off Russian nobleman in a czarist prison in Siberia, living everyday with dangerous criminals, murderers and thiefs.Based on the real experiences of the author.

I read this in order to search for Dostoyevskys 'moral rebirth' that he experienced after being sent to prison (Siberian work camp). This rebirth could be seen in his unique brand of Christian spirituality (which prompted Turgenev to call him 'the most evil Christian I have ever met'). What I enjoyed most about this work was how it provides a great insight to the mind of the author--and the tribulations he suffered through. A must read for a Dostoyevsky admirer.
