It felt good to finally get around to reading a classic. It was great to see the Socratic method at work by the master himself. However, I did not enjoy this genre as much as I enjoy philosophy. It was cleverly written, but just not my bag. I'm sure some genuinely love this genre and some others say they love this genre to give themselves a sense of importance. I'd be willing to read another work like this, but not because I like the style. I love the ideas.

Required reading for the Junior Great Book class I taught. THE TRIAL AND DEATH OF SOCRATES is a wonderful subject for philosophically inclined, which I am not. The story of a man who examined his life and found he had outlived his time, thereby proving his usefulness by rendering himself useless forever. Can you see why I am not philosophically inclined?

It's been said that all of Western philosophy is footnotes to Plato. This volume contains the most essential selection of Plato's dialogues for the beginning reader. If you want to begin philosophy, or to know what philosophy's about, read this.
