I felt a bit scandalised reading this! Near the beginning, there is an extra-marital affair, it is not described in graphic detail, not any real detail at all. It is merely hinted at and alluded to, but it is an undeniably steamy affair. I can understand the controversy it created on publication! It is bleak and depressing. I felt some sypathy for the lovers even as adulterers (and worse) but my sympathy lessened as they declined.

As a realist novel I think it is very successful. This certainly must have been a shock to readers, who were accustomed to man as struggling hero and supernatural overtones. Therese and Laurent, two lovers who kill Therese's husband in order to practice their affair more openly, are horrible people. Zola does not give them a break at all; he, with every other page, launches into a long analysis of their barbaric behaviour and their eventual hateful feelings toward one another. It is this that causes the book to be quite tedious more than occasionally. Some may think otherwise, but I didn't find some of the lead character to be flat. Madame Raquin, although she doesn't say much, is probably the most powerful character in the book: paralyzed by a stroke, she speaks only with her eyes, and it is she who survives, albeit in misery.
