Sparse, straight-forward and a tale of conscience by someone who doesn't believe in the spiritual. It doesn't quite work because it's impossible to sympathise with any of the characters whether they be oppressed, murdered or paralysed. Well, the cat, I feel sorry for the cat.

Livre lu pour les cours, mais vu que j'aime pas Zola, encore une lecture désagréable. Je ne suis pas du tout fan du style de cet auteur.

As a realist novel I think it is very successful. This certainly must have been a shock to readers, who were accustomed to man as struggling hero and supernatural overtones. Therese and Laurent, two lovers who kill Therese's husband in order to practice their affair more openly, are horrible people. Zola does not give them a break at all; he, with every other page, launches into a long analysis of their barbaric behaviour and their eventual hateful feelings toward one another. It is this that causes the book to be quite tedious more than occasionally. Some may think otherwise, but I didn't find some of the lead character to be flat. Madame Raquin, although she doesn't say much, is probably the most powerful character in the book: paralyzed by a stroke, she speaks only with her eyes, and it is she who survives, albeit in misery.

I felt a bit scandalised reading this! Near the beginning, there is an extra-marital affair, it is not described in graphic detail, not any real detail at all. It is merely hinted at and alluded to, but it is an undeniably steamy affair. I can understand the controversy it created on publication! It is bleak and depressing. I felt some sypathy for the lovers even as adulterers (and worse) but my sympathy lessened as they declined.

Loved this book! Had to read for European Civilzation 19th century class. Scandalous compared to Lady Chatterly's Lover! Great story that left me wanting to know more of what was going to happen. Therese has everybody fooled on what kind of person she is and marries Camille whom I guess what sort of her brother but no blood relation. Disgusting but not. Then has an affair with Camille's friend Laurent. Camille ends up losign his life for greed and passion between both characters that wanted different things out of it. You knew what most of the characters were thinking esp both Therese and Laurents mental breakdown. Definitely would read this again!

Book Club #26. I despised this book. Except for the page and a half which depicted a scene from The Luncheon of the Boating Party. The most depressing, useless piece of writing I've ever read. Did I say I didn't like it?

Zola's much better known for his painstakingly detailed, deceptively lyrical stories set in France of the Second Empire of the mid-nineteenth century, although really aimed at the France of the late nineteenth century Third Republic. THERESE RAQUIN, his earliest major work, stands out as a relatively simple story of jealousy, adultery, and murder in a small family. It's also an indication, as if one were needed, of Zola's unwillingness to compromise on the frequently grim and unpleasant endings (as so often in life) which marked many of his great later novels. The ending is a little TOO grim to the extent that it nearly crosses the line into Grand Guignol, but THERESE RAQUIN maintains its power to shock and horrify, especially with a bravura setpiece later in the novel involving a dinner party that's at once excruciating and hypnotic. While many of Zola's later works such as NANA and L'ASSOMOIR (and even "lighter" fare such as AU BONHEUR DES DAMES) are more deeply and richly populated with character and incident, THERESE RAQUIN's an admirable, if extremely depressing, and concise story that demonstrated both to Zola's world and to ours that here was a writer one ignored to one's cost.
