Roald Dahl is one of my new favorite children's authors. He's creative and fun and playful and smart, but best of all, he's in touch with his inner child! I felt transported back to my 6 and 7s while reading this book, and can only imagine how much wonder these pages would have held for me had I actually read them at that age.

My Aunt read it to me when I was a child. The authors wife was a family friend of ours and she had given us one of the first copies. It turned me on to books and has given me the love for them till this day.

Great book, still have memories about the book and the meaning behind it. Best gift for any child.

I remember this fondly from six grade. The teacher read it in pieces over a number of days. I've heard complaints about this author, and some I can understand. The book appeals to the age group it was written for.

Love Roald Dahl and his slanted way of looking at things. Always makes you see things in a different light and gives you a change of heart sometimes.

Drawn by the perfect stillness of the dead of night, little Sophie breaks the rules of the miserable orphanage where she resides, rises from her bed, and peers out the window. What she sees will change her life forever, a hulking shadow drawing nearer and nearer until she can clearly see a giant in a cape with tremendous ears. And he sees her!

Once again Dahl has brought a terrifying world to life, the most vicious danger imaginable to a tiny child - a land of man-eating giants, each more ferocious than the last, mercilously gobbling up humans left and right. And somehow little Sophie, with the help of the one-and-only Big Friendly Giant, must stop them all before they can attack again. Beautifully done, this story.

My first encounter with this book was via my fourth grade teacher Miss Betsy who had a voice for every character. Thinking back, I wish she'd been recorded bcs I'd love to listen to it now. I continue to love this book and reread it every once in a while. Whenever someone gives me a gigantic zuchinni, all I think is "snozzcumber". RD definitely had favorite nonsense words that he used in several books; snozzcumber is one of them. As a child, this book (as well as other RD books) always excited me to think that kids could do such big things, that anything was possible. My favorite giant name is "Flesh Lump Eater", and "Maid Masher" is right up there too. I should imagine he was very pleased with himself when writing this story.

IT is a humorous book with Dahl created special vocabulary. If you want to know how dreams are created and to roam in dreams land, then you must read this book. Excellent piece of writing with every page being a page turner. I never remember time while reading Dahl books, and always chances i miss the station i was to get down.

I thought this book was brilliant! Very funny. I understand it's a children's book, but it is written very well. Some jokes wouldn't be understood by children. In order to get the adventure side of the story you have to think like a child, otherwise some might say this book is stupid and boring; indeed it is not. This book is also relatively fast paced which is good for children, and most likely for adults as well. Children would get too bored too quickly, because they want to see the end, and adults would get too board to quickly reading all "childish" bits.

The BFG is a wonderful book that is about a girl named Sophie that is captured by a giant when she sees him blowing something into a window of a house down the street. He knew she had caught him because he could hear her all the way down the street! It definitely is a good thing she had been carried off by him, because if she had been taken off by the Fleshlumpeater, the Gizzardgulper, the Bonecruncher, the Meatdripper, the Butcher Boy, or any of the other man-eating, fifty foot tall giants, she would have been dinner. Luckily, she was captured by a dream-blowing giant. Soon, he takes her to giant country, and she tries a snozzcumber and frobscottle. After Sophie witnesses the giants gallop off to England to eat “little chidlers” (children), she develops a plan. The plan was to blow a dream into the Queen of England’s bedroom, explaining everything about the giant’s trips. When the Queen sees Sophie right on her windowsill, just like her dream told her she would, she partially believed her dream. Soon, she called other great leaders of different countries, just to make sure, and when she had made three calls, she believed her dream, and they started to plan how to capture the giants. Soon, the BFG, Sophie and the army had brought back the nine gruesome giants, and then they were thrown into a pit that they could not get out of. The only other time that they ate another human was when three drunken teenagers fell in the pit that the brutes were being held captives. You could hear their cries of delight, followed by the crunching of bones, for miles! In the end, Sophie and the BFG were heroes, the BFG even got an education, and he learned how to write properly.
