One of the things I love about Roald Dahl is that I can never quite tell if I'm reading satire or not. I mean, at first glance this seems a similar book to, say, Peter Rabbit, what with the animals stealing from the farmers and all, but at the same time it turns it on their head by having the good guys be foxes (traditionally villains in these sorts of stories), describing them quite clearly killing the birds they steal, and having them steal liquor from one of the farmers, not just food. At one point, one of the characters even questions the morality of all the stealing they're doing, and it's largely excused because the farmers are such very bad men anyway. Is it a satire? A deconstruction? A somewhat snarky but otherwise straight story, written for a younger audience than Dahl normally does? I'm not sure.

I heard they would make the movie adaptation of this book, so I thought I should read it first, just as I did for another of his books (charlie and the chocolate factory), but I have to say that I was a bit disapointed. Charlie and the chocolate factory, Matilda and James and the Giant peach had much more substance than this one. It was cute, true, but it made me think of a fairy tale, more than a novel. Dont get me wrong, I love fairy tales, but I was expecting a little more.(70)
