SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson is a riveting, compassionate book about a teenage outcast.

Melinda Sordino destroyed her reputation before even setting foot in the dangerous halls of Merryweather High School. By calling the police at an end-of-summer bash, she is now officially considered a loser. With her old friends gone, Melinda no longer speaks to anyone; even her new "best friend," Heather.

This novel on self-discovery, empathy, and social acceptance is simply breathtaking.

Without a doubt, SPEAK is a phenomenal book. It is emotional, inspirational, gripping, and surprisingly funny. It is told from Melinda's poignant, outspoken point of view. Anderson perfectly depicts the cliques, heartbreaks, and reality of high school. This book will grip you from cover to cover.

SPEAK captured my heart with it's sarcastic sense of humor and perfect portrayal of high school. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh, a tear, or anything in between.

Absolute favorite. The only book in existence I have read at least 20 times since I borrowed it from the library the first time. As soon as I finished it I bought it. I have lent it to friends along with other books but Speak is the onle one I make sure I get back.

Incredibly written in first-person teen-speak, hilarious portrayal of the 9th grade struggles and cruelties, laughed harder than I ever expected given the topic - a teen who takes a year to find her voice again after surviving trauma.

 Speak...Yell...say somthing!!!

Just when Anderson was learning how to block out the traumas of being a teenager, the author revisits the agonies of adolescence in Speak. The story, lightly based on Andersons life, takes on a strong subject matter, but deliverd anit climatically. Your tagged along with a socially outcasted teen, who is going thru a very complicated situation, but as a reader your just left there...watching the self destruction...waiting for more to happen. The first couple of chapters promise a very good story, but overall the book is a bit dull. However, youll enjoy her little twist on the characters monologues and the way she presents each chapter.
