I always liked Thomas Hardy - he had much heart and showed compassion towards his characters. Readers I think would find sympathy even for the most despicable of his characters - there is always something about them that is for me, redeemable, despite initial negative impression. Hardy also wrote about imperfect and yet commendable women - he seemed to have a very good insight into the complex psyche of a modern woman. Far from the Madding Crowd was no exception. You could read this novel today and still make a connection with any of the characters. Highly recommended.

Ridiculously unbelievable characters living in a small town, mainly centred around sheep, hay-making and everyone being in love with "Bathsheba". Nevertheless enjoyable, amusing (I find it hard to believe that Hardy was really serious) and nice change to read something about the lower/middle farming classes of olden days. The descriptive text is what makes this book, rather than boring paragraphs about landscape Hardy is very good at providing little quirky analogies (which have stood the test of time) enabling you to really visualize being in the setting. For that reason you can pick up and put down this book and enjoy little tastes of the writing, take the time to try and imagine it all. I tended to do this a lot at the start of the book as it begins with a less than riveting storyline but it does pick up near the end- even if the storyline is nearly as ridiculous as the characters involved!

It's got the classic description of the countryside vividly explored in front of u!!! The various relationships in this work are so complex and it was wonderful to be there as each relationship functions in the exact manner in which they do still to this day. Years go by, but in matters of love and obsession, not much seems to change.

Easy read, interesting enough to make me want to read more. However once introduced to the mind of the perpetrator/criminal who turns out to be a psycho, which probably means the murders are randomly made targeted at a particular group, the rest of the story is easy to guess. The drawings are great yet lessens the seriousness of the story. A good read nevertheless.

The plot of this novel is an interesting one, but Hardy's over description will almost always kill any enjoyable scene. Most of the central characters in the novel, the exception being Oak, are also extremely annoying and far too easy to dislike.

Lived something similar in the late 20th century! T. Hardy captures humanity's archetypal tragedies in his dramas and tragedies.
