I read this during a period when I was reading a lot of crap; it stands out as memorable and full of interesting comparisons to the mess that is the status system in the West compared to poverty in third world countries.

Brilliant--I've loved Bridget Jones, but this book surprised and delighted me. The satirical look at celebrity giving kept me thinking for months.

I was surprised by this book. From Helen Fielding, inventor of chick lit, I expected light fluffiness. Cause Celeb definitely has some of that -- and it was entertaining -- but it's much more substantive than the Bridget Jones books. A great read.

Written by the same person who wrote Brigette Jones' Diary and it's nothing like that book! It's a pretty good read, slow at times but details the superficial and the deep that exists in us all at times.

Helen's style of writing is... predictable. The beginning was a downer given the two settings clumsily coming together. But at times I felt like I was reading Bridget Jones' Diary again, except instead of picturing Colin Firth as the proclaimed love interest, I pictured... Simon Baker playing that role. Yeah, that would be a good role for him.
Even worse, just when I thought I had escaped the sorrow of losing Michael Jackson, his name pops up one the very last page of the book. Damn.

Best known for her creation of Bridget Jones, Fielding's previous and less successful novel "Cause Celeb" is written in a different, more traditional style with a more serious tone. However, the comedic elements that come together are strong precursors of her later works. The glittering and vacuous world of the London celebrity scene, as experienced by the non-celeb new girlfriend of a successful cad, is contrasted sharply with her later experience managing a refugee camp on the brink of a humane disaster of epic proportions. The juxtaposion of these worlds is breathtaking, and Fielding's ability to make the reader laugh while they are being horrified by the tragedy that the heroine is experiencing makes this book her strongest to date. A definite must.

Helen Fielding (also wrote Bridget Jones's Diary) delivers an easy breezy read. This chick-lit with a soul is a winner. I wish there were more books like this one out there. All fluffy on the outside, but with a meaningful middle.

Really enjoyed this book--more serious than the Bridget Jones series, but just as funny at times.

The plot in itself had me interested, but the story telling had me distracted. I couldn't keep all the characters straight because she would breifly mention them and then 300 pages later they would be a main character, she did this multiple times. There were scenes that made me cry from the great discription and then scenes that I had no idea what was going on. Every time I picked the book up I had to read for 10 minutes before I could get back in to the groove. It was an OK read.

I feel a bit sorry for Ms. Fielding. I think she’s just wonderful when she writes about strong, intelligent, kick-ass chicks out to save the world (as is the case as well with ‘Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination’), but all everyone seems to want from her is the eternal Bridget drivel - in fact, having read comments she has made before about the lukewarm reception that this book had, in comparison with the BJD series, I’ve got the sneaking suspicion she too secretly laments this (all the way to the bank - ah well, good on her, I say). Anyway, Cause Celeb has all one could possibly want for an entertaining read: an interesting, breezy story that at the same time has its dark and moving moments, funny dialogue and observations, and a great, likable heroine.
