Who doesn't want to read a story about boy and his (talking) dog? Oh, and let's not forget the creepy pirates and the riddles, both of which are fixtures in Jacques' books.

I got this book from my grandparents so I picked it up to read. It has an absolutely amazing beginning with the haunted ship but the interest in the story tapers off. It is a great mystery though.

I've been trying to figure out what this book was called for a while, I remember reading it a long time ago and loving it. I mean, castaways roaming the earth for eternity, a boy and his telepathic dog, a town full of quirky characters- what's not to love?

As a fan of Brian Jacques' Redwall series, I decided to read some of his other works, such as Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. I was pleasantly surprised with this book - Jacques' unique writing style is very evident throughout it, but he uses it to retell a legend with his own fantastical ideas. He introduces the origins of the cursed Flying Dutchman, and creates two very interesting characters to follow the lives of. It's such a wonderful novel, anyone who has ever loved pirates should definitely read it.

A great new series from the writer of Redwall. Like two stories in one, because of the skipping around in time. The characters have the same good attitudes and hilarious senses of humor we expect from Jacques, but in widely different settings than we've ever seen before.

After the disaster known as the Pirates of the Carribean sequels I wish people would know that there is more the Flying Dutchman legend than what Hollywood has done to it. I'm not saying that Brian Jacques' supurb novel is hardcore fact, but at least it sticks to the legend even as he puts his own spin on it. Interestingly enough, the cursed ship is not the focus of this story, but rather a fascinating and creative way to get a great story going.

When the captain of the ship was punished by Heaven, a couple of stowaways--a boy and a dog--are the only ones aboard who are not cursed. Rather, they are granted the gift of immortality (and speech for the dog). They spend the next several centuries acting rather as guardian angels, helping others and experiencing the joys and heartbreak of living forever.

The main plot is an adorable one of an old widow women desperate to protect her property. In comes Jacques' classic take of simple good vs. evil in the form of the nice village folk and the nasty rich people. Some people might find this cheesy, but it works and is entertaining, exciting, and heartwarming.

And on top of this is spooky story of the haunted ship. It's a delicious blend.
