A captivating tale on love, betrayal and "perceived betrayal".

A bit tedious and cumbersome for a busy working mom who likes to read for enjoyment. Impressed with Tolstoy's rich characters, their internal dialogue, their struggles as human beings grappling for happiness, passion, enlightenment, etc. Intrigued with author's inclusion of so many social-political issues (class, Women's Rights, Worker's Rights, morality, Christianity, agrarian issues modernization, politics). A very dense, rich book that I wish I had had more patience to read slowly and more thoroughly.

I can't figure out why so many critics think that Tolsoy ultimately sympathizes with Anna. She is sympathetic in a lot of ways, but overall, she is shallow, self-centered, and the source of heartache for almost everyone she knows. As a mom, I cannot forgive her for abandoning her son! So...why do so many think she is the sympathetic protaganist?

This was a wonderful read! It seemed like your were reading two separate stories, but in the end the two merged together. The person that was the most interesting was Levin. He struggled with his faith and whether or not their was a God. The story was skillfully blended together with Anna and other characters. It is under 1,000 pages, a very enjoyable read!

Not enough going on, too long and boring for my taste, but had to finish it.

Amazingly ahead of its times. Extremely well written, although verbose towards the end. LT's writing is simple and endearing - will always pick up one more of his books!
