I grew up and lived many years within 50 miles of the setting of this book. The geography, the weather, the people, their attitudes and dialog are all flawless.

Good characters, good storyline. This is the first book of one of my favorite series.

This was the first Walt Longmire mystery I read. I liked it, but wasnt 100% sold on the series. I enjoyed The Dark Horse more, but still wonder if all his female characters will be the same or if they get better. I am going to find out though, as the books are enjoyable.

Walt Longmire just became my favorite character since Joe Pickett. I'm too old to be Joe Pickett, so I can become Walt Longmire when I grow up.

This guy needs to write more! A great combo of a murder mystery and a western! Makes you want to move out west.

Is a fine lyrical first person narrative that captures the brutal beauty and rebel lifestyles that still exist in the American west, truly a book for those of us who have lived on the fringe far away from strip malls and multiplexes. Johnson has created such vivid character in Walt and Bear; which is impressive on it's own because men have hard relationships to describe. I can't wait to see what happens to Walt next, and I really hope he gets some walls up in his house! The best about this novel though, I grew up around people just like these guys and they're still some of the best people I know!

Nice enjoyable read. Unpredictable ending... which I guess is good.. but ... sometimes it would be nice to have been able to figure it out... I look forward to more.
Fun, easy going, enjoyable.

I think this is Craig Johnson's first book and I'd like to read another. Interesting characters and some fresh perspectives but a little slow and long.

This book started out strong, I really do like the characters and dialogue, and I was intrigued by the murder mystery in the midwest. but soon it became obvious that the author loved to spend pages and pages on visual details, describing sunsets over the mountains and snow storms as though he were describing every tiny detail of a painting. by the time i realized that these descriptions took up a vast majority of the book i was already halfway through and loathe to put it down and start something else so i finished it. blah
