This story is about a man who could not accept inperfection in his daughter. The decesion that he makes would haunt him to his death.

The writing was beautiful. The story was great until the end. She could have gone farther if she hadn't killed off the father. That ruined the ending of the book.

this was our book for book club picked by erin, oct/nov 09. I liked it and it and I couldn't wait to see what happened. It was very sad though.

I kind-of enjoyed this book alternating between wanting (figuratively) to grab the protagonists by the scruff of the neck and bash their heads together and having a deep sympathy for their problems. I suspect many people who weren't actually there in the 1960s will have no sympathy for David, but his difficulties in dealing with a Down's baby and his solution would have been real at that time... However, I will never, ever forget visiting a mental institution in the early 70s!!!
