The writing was beautiful. The story was great until the end. She could have gone farther if she hadn't killed off the father. That ruined the ending of the book.

I kind-of enjoyed this book alternating between wanting (figuratively) to grab the protagonists by the scruff of the neck and bash their heads together and having a deep sympathy for their problems. I suspect many people who weren't actually there in the 1960s will have no sympathy for David, but his difficulties in dealing with a Down's baby and his solution would have been real at that time... However, I will never, ever forget visiting a mental institution in the early 70s!!!

Usually I buy tons of books at one time and start reading every single book until one of them grabs me. This book had me from the description. I kept reading this book until it was done. I absolutely hated each character for being so gosh dang selfish!! But love love LOVED the book!! So glad I purchased my own copy to read again in a few years!
