I had a difficult time getting through some of this book. I felt like the author was rambling. It made it hard for me to focus. I did like the book overall but it was one of those things where I wanted to finish it but I wasn't sure I would.

I didn't even make it all the way through Italy - watching the movie just ruined this book for me. I felt no sympathy for the author or her plight, and I REALLY wanted to. I felt even less sympathy for her when I read that the whole trip was paid for BY her publisher, for the purposes of writing the book. Blah.

Meh. It was okay. Honestly I was bored about a third of the way through the Eat part. I ended up downloading the audiobook to get through the rest. Elizabeth Gilbert narrates, and she has an excellent reading voice. That is what got me through. It had a few minor funny moments, but mostly I was just bored.

Anyone who has seen my profile knows I'm not a religious person - I'm not very spiritual for that matter either. And yoga? Good lord! Tried it and hated it. Why then was I so mesmerized by this book? I think any woman in her 30s who has been faced with the pressures of work, life, and love and has questioned her place in all of them can understand just a little bit what the author was going through and why she took the path she did. I don't know if I could confine myself to an ashram in the middle of India, but her time in Italy and Indonesia sounded just spectacular.

I just got to India, and thus far Liz seems very self-indulgent. I'm sorry to say it since everyone I've spoken with loves this book (even my mother), but I just can't help but think how lucky of her to take a year off to "heal" herself in beautiful foreign lands. If we all were able to share in such a gift, maybe society would be a completely different thing.
I have just arrived in India, but thus far she seems pretty self-serving. I can't say I blame her too much, but she seems VERY self indulgent. Plus, not everyone going through a hard time gets to take off for a year! Sheesh.

Interesting and loved the descriptions of Italy. But had so many fundamental disagreements with the author's belief's that I had a hard time enjoying the book.

This memoir resonated with me early on because the author was about my age and went through divorce at about the same time in her life as I did. I like her playfulness, her carefully planned and simultaneously somewhat random writing style and her depth of thought about life issues. I like to believe that my writing is similar. :p My favorite part was the "Pray" part when she was in the Ashram in India and exploring her spirituality.

I wanted to love it - and I did love parts - but found I only liked it. Why? There were times when some of Gilbert's revelations felt a bit contrived...maybe too much emphasis on the numerical perfection? Or, maybe it's that she was, on occasion, overindulgent so it was hard to join her in her one-woman 'pity parties' as she toured the world in search of herself. Overall - 3 of 5. If I'm remebering correctly, my favorite section may have been the middle, her travels in India. Again, not a bad read...just not at the level of all the hype (in my opinion).

Highly recommended - especially if you are open to the idea of having spiritual growth through meditation. The author is witty, real and most of us can relate to her experience (one way or the other) fairly well. The part about this Richard guy from Texas just cracked me up. Enjoy!
Best book I've read this year - I was so moved by this book that I laughed, cried and fell in love with a few of the characters in this book. Liz did a fantastic job describing her own experiences and struggles/humor in life (and meditation) that it resonates with most readers including myself. Highly recommended!

I LOVE this book! Am listening to it on audiobook for the second time (after reading it in paper form several months ago). She can make me laugh and cry on the same page (not that audiobooks have pages...). "I was sweating, not like a person sweats, but like a cheese sweats..." Something about her use of language in this one just kills me. Don't like all of her other stuff, but I sure do like this one. Can you tell?

boy, did I hate this book. The "eat" part was okay, but I began to have suspicions when I reached India with Ms. Gilbert, where she introduced her ashram stay by firmly telling her readers that she wasn't going to name names, and made sure we all knew how highly selective the ashram is when permitting people to visit. Jeez. A really unneeded "I am so important" moment. But it was the "love" part where I got totally pissed. Please. Do we really need yet another Cinderella story about how finding the right man and allowing him to love you solves all our problems? I don't think so!

Its a good book, but I expected more. Maybe it was that I had to many books that I wanted to read that I rush in to it, Italy is beautiful and so are there people, not fare to judge "ganster". I enjoy people as well and my trip to Italy gave we the opportunity to learn and pray for the good.

I listed to this book on audio CD. The author actually has a great narrator's voice! I enjoyed her writing, but I don't know if I'll do an audio book again any time soon. It seems to take much longer than just reading, and due to profane language, I could only listen to this when I was alone in the car. It was nice that everything worked out so well for her; would that all divorcees could have such an experience!

Do I envy her? Of course! She got to do the ultimate vacation, running away to Italy to eat, eat and eat, months in an Indian ashram to meditate, idyllic Bali…

But I didn’t find it a whine-a-logue as I thought I would. As someone once said, if only everyone in the world were making some effort to search for ones own peace then the world would be a different place.

It is for this reason I am grateful that she shared her story. May we all eat good, pray better, and love best.

BORING!!!! It took everything in me to finish. I can usually read a book or 2 a week this took a month to read. I also thought it just ended to fast. There were interesting parts but I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they need help falling asleep or putting a baby or kid to sleep.

My favorite part is India in this book, the pray. Sounds pretty inspiring to meditate now. I also like Bali but not as much as India. The Italy travels are interesting but it slowed down my reading and put down this book for weeks before I slowly crept on reading and finally arrived in India. I guess I don't like the idea of reading about food when I can't actually taste it at the very moment. Overall, I highly recommend this book to those who are seekers of life. If you're like me, I hope you make it through passed Italy because it is really worth it.

The book was very breezily written and readable, but felt embarrassingly hippy-dippy and anachronistic for my taste. I kept thinking "was this book written in 2004 or 1974? Isn't running into the arms of eastern religeon to "find yourself" after divorce what OUR PARENTS generation did? Where's the part where she takes macrame classes and joins a swingers club and smokes some groovy reefer to "open her mind?" Sure, the whole three countries thing was interesting, but all the new-agey self-congratulation just felt like listening to my Mom.
