This book was ssooooo much better than the movie- the environment, the stories of encounters with natural threats and wonders, and the imagery of the family's home are so much richer in the book- I loved this book! Good fun read.

Not as exciting as I expected, but then I guess it was written for children. It did seem a bit like it was just a list of all the animals they shot without first seeing what they might be.

Was a good read, tho I did get a little annoyed by how the father new everything, from the classification of animals to the making of gunpowder.

Lived inside of this book for over a year while I was young...did not want to finish it...kept putting it off and reading just a few pages at a time so I would not have to come away from the island of the "swiss family" All young people should read and so should adults who have not,,recommend around 5th grade for good readers I adored this book when I read it as a kid...think I will read it again

LOVE classics! My kids & I snuggle up together on the front porch (especially love it when it is slightly chilly & get under quilts) at night & read books like this! Kids don't always need pictures..they actually can use their imaginations :)

Something similar - survival- is My Side of the Mountain or Hatchet. "God helps those who help themselves" could be this family's motto. Loved this as a child and still love it now. A lot to be said for being resourceful and courageous.
