Great book. If you have any interest in the change between Old and New Hollywood, this will be a great primer for the change that occurred. Harris traces five flicks BONNIE AND CLYDE, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (a great film to teach), GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?, THE GRADUATE and DOCTOR DOLITTLE--all nominees for Best picture.

The anecdotes are great. The insight to some of the scenes is quite enlightening, especially about IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, which is quite a strong part of the book.

Comprehensive and entertaining account of the 5 films noimated for Best Picture 1968 and the Old Hollywood vs New Hollywood shifts that this pivotal year of Best Pic noms brought about. Great film history...inspires me to watch dozens of films beyond the 5 that it focusses on.

This is a well-written, fast-paced chronicle of a year in film-making that changed the course of movie-making for years to come. A must-read for anyone who considers themselves a movie junkie.

I highly recommend this book. Mark Harris does an excellent job
of placing film history squarely in the mix of social and political history
in 1967. I was especially impressed by his analysis of both Warren Beatty's fight
to get Bonnie and Clyde made and Sidney Poitier's battle for legitimacy
in both black and white society. He was the top grossing star that year
(To Sir with Love, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to
Dinner). There's also fabulous gossipy stuff. Loved it.

Didn't agree with the premise of the importance of this year in Hollywood. But was a fascinating read. Kudos to Harris for his research. The book was always entertaining.
