In reading this novel, I felt as if invited to attempt a psychological analysis of its main characters (whose streams of consciousness we follow) and also to explore philosophical ideas. The latter include "what is love"(and is this the same as being "in love"?) and "can people follow their true feelings while still behaving as virtuous members of society?". Woolf also explores situations in which people's thoughts are very different to the way in which they behave.The story is elegantly written, memorable and explores interesting themes. However, I personally found it a long and laborious read. The only character with whom I developed much empathy was Mary, and her part of the story tailed off unexpectedly and, I felt, unsatisfactorily.

I love this book. It's lesser known because it's not one of Woolf's later, more modern works, but to me it's a beautiful bridge between the classic romanticism of Jane Austen and the modernist texts for which Woolf is better remembered. It's word choice is consistently descriptive without being too florid, and its language and story describe love in an original way that allows readers inevitably to connect deeply with the affected characters. One of my favorite books!
