A sleeper by a writer who has focused much more on fantasy and sci-fi (niether genre one of my faves), but moved into an extremely smart elucidation of the Lower East Side of New York mindset along with the hippie refugees of the '70s to write a mystery/psychological thriller that was one of my favorite reads of the year (including 2008).

This was a dark one. Hard to rally around a character so miserable, but the great writing saved the so-so ending.

The critic who described this book as dark and beautiful was spot on. It's much darker than any of Elizabeth Hand's previous work. I was truly moved when Cass saw Aphrodite's photographs. I felt like I was right there with her. I felt the beauty and the devastation. This is not the kind of novel that you can't put down- it's the kind of novel you do put down, partly because it's so intense and partly because you want to prolong the experience.
