I loved it. Absolute genius as usual from Eric Arthur Blair.

A very enjoyable book that due to Orwell's writing style doesn't feel aged at all. I did struggle with his 3 chapters on fishing early on(boring)and he does occasionally end up listing things (not exciting or descriptive enough) but once you get past them its an intelligent and sometimes witty recollection of a middle aged man pining for his yesteryears. Well worth a read.

A bit depressing (but then again it's George Orwell). But it was a great social critique that is still relevant.

George Orwell certainly knows how to write an anti-utopian novel. A painful and gripping insight into the sheer disappointment of life!!!Read it and weep it happens to us all.

Although less known, I find this to be George Orwell's best novel - and it is just about the common theme of growing up and change.

Great novel-dark humor-the beginnings of 1984's thoughts on the individual.

Orwell's story of the middle-aged and dissatisfied man George is rightfully an all time classic. Although not Orwell's most well-known book there is really no excuse for not reading such a beautifully written story. If you enjoy reading a good book and you haven't already read this then do so at once. I did find it slightly plodding at first but not long after I was stunned to find myself completely sucked into George's world and devouring page after page like Johnny 5. I can't properly express the way Orwell works on the mind only to say that to read Orwell on form like this is to experience human genius in literaure. Funny, feeling, emotive, genuine, sad and, ultimately, true. Essential.

I've read all of Orwell's novels, biopics and essays and this was, even if not the most revered in literary circles, my favourite by far. What is most interesting is Orwell's perception of a society in decline as highlighted by the fact that, upon the return to the village of his childhood, Orwell's central character neither recognises the village nor it's inhabitants he. Written in beautifully simple prose, as are all of Orwell's novels, this is as astutely socially perceptive as anything I've read by the author. Reading Orwell is not quite time-travel but is surely the next best thing!
