Dealing with orwell`s homeless years that were said to be done purely for writing purposes,a great book. Also orwell at one point wanted to go to prison so he could write about the experience. See also,"The Road to wigan pier" about the miners struggle.

i liked animal farm and have yet to read 1984, but i have to say this was an awesome read. it was so detailed and sepecific in its narration of poverty and hard times in this area and time. i felt like i could literally smell the streets and cafes and hear the chatter among the locals. it was a lovely and satisfying glimpse into another world.

Life as a lowly hotel worker (plongeur -dishwasher) in Parisian eateries or as a tramp in London. Poverty , unemployment, despair , hope and triumph told in an atobiographically political Orwellian way. If you only ever read 1 book , make sure this is it.

Excellent portrayal of the world of Paris when starving. Wonderfully entertaining characters of that world. Plus excellent observations of the workings of hotels and restaurants from the overworked employees' viewpoint. Try reading this.

A fascinating account of Orwell's time spent living as a plongeur (dishwasher) and in various Paris dosshouses as well as his time living rough in London.

Just finished this while on holiday - one of my favorite this year. Absolutely great read. If you ever wanted to know what life on the street was like in the 20's-30's, this is the only place you need to look. So much interesting information, the personalities that you would just never see if it weren't for Orwell - amazing stuff. My only issue is that it is so short.

This is not a political novel of the type that 1884 or Animal Farm is, but it is a vivid description of poverty and restaurant life in Paris. If you think your life sucks it will make you feel well off -Wil
