I find that I have to have my dictionary handy with this one and a quiet room to read. One of the more challenging books but I enjoy a good book and this is one of them.

My father ( a priest - Anglican) always had 2 piles of books, 1 Christian Philosophers , Theologians and the like, sometime C.S. Lewis who he encouraged me to read ( not as heavy duty I think, the other pile was paper back westerns and detective novels. I never picked from the "jesus" pile. Recently a long time acquaintance died, he was very intelligent, rotund, with a cherubic shaped face and smile. His wife could have been a twin. They had an aura of "agape"(love) about them projected to each other and everyone around. Before writing the widow I went on Wikepedia to make sure " agape " meant what I thougt it did.I came across this book. I commend it, thoughtful, insightful, funny, loving and not much "Jesus" stuff. A very worthwhile read
Wonderful book

The book seems to be something Lewis wrote to enhance his own understanding, then was inclined to share with others. It is thought provoking, both with respect to love among people, and between people and God. One interesting point involved his explanation of why Jesus, who told people to love their neighbors, also said that whover wanted to be a disciple must hate their own families. Another section explores the interplay between "Need-love" and "Gift-love", with no shortage of good examples and implications.

Potentially life-changing, really. And in less than 150 pages. That said, it doesn't snap like some of his writing.

Perhaps my favorite non-fiction book by C.S. Lewis even over Mere Christianity. Lewis covers all aspects of love in family, friendship, romance, charity, community, relationship to God and even love for country. A truly excellent read I would recommend to anyone, even perhaps a non-believer.

As the title shows, Lewis writes about 4 different types of love: friendship, affection , erotic love (eros), and the Love of God. He discusses their importance, how they can be abused, defines them well, and gives numerous examples and circumstances. He kind of rambles, though, and gets boring. I thought it was interesting the way he talked about "Need-Love" and "Gift-Love" and the applications of both. This is not one of those books I would be tempted to read again (and if I did I would wait until I was much older) despite the wisdom it contains.

This is just sort of a commentary, I am just getting into the book, but here is a first thought quotation from another source:

"My song is love unknown
My Savior's love to me,
Love to the loveless shown,
that they might lovely be."
Samuel Crossman
(1624-1684)

Still reading ... what a wonderful book.
