as I think permanently.. orwell has been a modern hero.. one of the last in our time, and the said: if you were born lucky, you are indeed! that book describes how a war can be such foolish and how can be foolish as well a population while is running... in and suffer for self-harm, today, when I watch barcelona images and overall old city centre narrow streets I am wondering at orwell's descriptions thank you george

You've likely read Orwell, but if you have not read this one, do it! This is his account of his time fighting in the Spanish Civil war. It's a fascinating account, and shows his uncanny ability as a writer to convey big ideas with simple dialogue. It's of special interest to those who find the history of socialism intriguing, especially the shift from Marxism-Leninism to Stalinist Communism.

Excellent - as he says this isn't the best for an overview of the Spanish Civil war but it provides a fascinating insight into the madness of a country at war with itself. Definitely prefigures both Animal Farm (the evil farce of the internecine fighting between various factions) and 1984 (inhuman terror of political liquidations). Crystal clear style, as well - unshowy but elegant. Must read!

Obscure et désastreuse guerre d'Espagne, vécue de l'intérieur par Orwell durant 6 mois, poussé par un vent révolutionnaire et anti-fasciste, bien vite déçu par les coups politiques fumeux... Ce livre ne permet pas de comprendre les enjeux de cette guerre, je n'en ai pas lu les appendices qui en décrivent les arcanes politiques car je me réserve le copieux ouvrage de Beevor pour en dénouer l'écheveau. Reste qu'Orwell fait partie de cette espèce race d'êtres humains capables d'aller mourir sur le front pour défendre des idées... Mourir pour des idées, l'idée est excellente, moi j'ai failli mourir de ne l'avoir pas eu... Ouaip...Courage ou inconscience ? Je reste admiratif de ce parti pris que je n'aurais sans doute pas eu, de cet engagement formidable...Sans doute suis-je devenu trop bourgeois... 11/4/09

Excellent work, which isn't a surprise from Orwell. If anyone is curious about the experience of being a foreign foot soldier in the Spanish Civil War, this is a superb read (and is even if you're not curious about such things.) Fascinating work about a war I previously felt that I didn't know enough about. If you're interested in the experience of being a foreign foot soldier in the Spanish Civil War, a great read for sure!

Em português "Homenagem à Catalunha". Obra de referência sobre a "Guerra Civil Espanhola" (1936-1939) que culminou com o esmagamento das repúblicas democráticas do actual estado espanhol e a subida ao poder de F.Franco (com a adjuda preciosa de Salazar e Hitler). O livro descreve e dá pistas sobre a envolvência de todas as partes no conflito e das suas responsabilidades ao longo de todo o processo ... Imprescindível para comprrender mais um pouco da história ibérica recente.
