“Somebody or other had said that the modern world is only habitable by saints and scoundrels. He, Gordon, wasn’t a saint. Better, then, to be an unpretending scoundrel along with others”
Most of the time there is a huge distance between our ideals and reality. It is beautiful to be idealistic, to look for utopia and to find Shangri-La. But I think that we should be as frank as to accept that, there are some awful but undeniable facts in our world such as power, greed, jealousy, money, and etc which we are not able to eliminate them and we will not have a Garden of Eden with them. So maybe the only practical way is to KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING.

Gordon Comstock's story of disillusionment with a money-minded society, about his determination to becoming a poet, to sticking to principles in trying to escape a drowsy meaningless life... And the realisation of his incapacity of writing, of loving Rosemary, of keeping up to his ideals... He learns that poverty's first effect is that it kills thought, that he should also 'keep the aspidistry flying!'

The very personal story of a struggling, anti-money young writer slowly descending into squalor and misery for his principles. A much smaller book in scope than his other books, but worth reading if it hits you at the right time of your life.

"Not liberal and under 30 and you have no heart. Liberal and over 30 and you have no brain."This book is brilliant, although it would be hard to say that I enjoyed it - I found Gordon detestable through and through, even his change at the end is not redemption enough. He is everything he despises, and is worse because he thinks he is better than it. He is no more than a cruel, idealist hypocrite of the worse kind of "Bad faith".
