The author has empathetically written about how an Indian thinks, feels and acts. The success of certain Britisher’s like Mr.Cyril Fielding, in winning the hearts of the Indians is a case study for the Britishers. The book is not an easy read. It requires patience, but it never the less has its moments of tender human emotions.

I read this book in college and could not remember what it was about. I re-read it, and thought it was fascinating, thought-provoking. One of the main themes is racism/prejudice, both overt and subtle, and how reationships, lives, careers, loves are nurtured and/or ruined by it. My favorite part was the ending: When Aziz and Fielding hurl insult after insult to one another, yet the reader knows that they love each other profoundly.

The book could have been alternatively titled as "India __ Demystified, Decoded".

I really liked it. Hard to tell where the climax is, though.

This one had to grow on me, as I started out listening to it in a distracted state of mind, but it’s finally hooked me. The story itself is interesting – the interplay of people and cultures in British colonial India of the 1920’s – but the storytelling is masterful. In fact, this is one where listening to the book was hard, because the arrogant, snooty British attitude came across so strongly in the narrator that I almost gave up. Now I’m glad I didn’t.

I never knew I liked EM Forster. The way he describes emotions, and people's foibles, and attempts to impress one another, and fit in, make him a literary genius.

Beautiful and sad. Wonderful for self-reflection on how you view others and other cultures. I do think it rather unfortunate, however, that Forester should feel compelled to portray the main English protragonist as the level headed one because, in a way, he is agonostic and thus so much more practical and able to deal with the cultural differences. But perhaps this was true for Forster himself and thus is reflected in the book.

Nonetheless, it is an excellent read and it has so many fabulous nuances and glimpes at the human heart and psyche that reveal a marvelous understanding of how complex relationships are between the East and West, even now!

It was pretty good. Not amazing, but good as school books go. Forster's obvious scoff at Christianity got on my nerves though.
