Although those that know me closely know of my destation to centralism and therefore socialism, this is an important socio-political work combining socialism, realism and a good dose of Orwellian humour.

whenever I see human whales at an American mall, I always think of what Orwell said, "the working man can live off beans, soup carrots and lettuce, but he wants something tasty...and why not?". Brilliant insights into poverty, class, the human condition and Britain. Probably one of the three best British books of the 20th century.

I think he wrote this in 1939 and it's striking how relevant it is for today's political climate. I kept inserting recent event or situations as I see them into his arguments and they made sense. His defense of and call to Socialism is so simple and straightforward that it's hard not to agree with it.

First half is a great study of the working class of England in the early 20th century. The second half is weaker because its sole focus is Orwell's argument for Socialism. Overall though a very good work.
