The book is wonderfully written. It's been written in six parts. You could almost taste and hear the hustle and bustle of Wessex (where the book is based and where Hardy lived and loved) of that time and you are drawn into the character's almost immediately just from reading the page you could feel the emotion that went into it. Even the first chapter was pretty sad to read. And as the book progress you find yourself even questioning your own views of love and marriage as both take a pretty big beating in this book as well as some religious views of the day. And I do like the fact that thou both the main characters are cousins it's not really touched upon in this book other then by Sue's first husband Mr. Phillotson, who you do feel somewhat sorry for as well, but also angry that he does seem to take advantage of Sue's emotions. But remains a love story as it should despite of that.

The obscure upright, intelligent and simple Jude has a dream. If only life was that simple.

A tale of struggle and inequality, of love and disappointment, a tale of joy and tragedy. For me it is one of Hardy's best novels. I read it four times for my A level and It became like a best friend.

I really am not sure what the end moral lesson of the book is. Perhaps it's that there are no good choices for those who think too hard. And who, in the end, is the protagonist? This book is thought provoking at the same time as extremely depressing.

Didn't find it an easy book to read, but really glad I persevered as it reaches a typical Hardy-esque depressing finale. Worth the effort.
