I'm going to commit sacrilege by saying I found this book dry, and I was unable to finish it. The writing is eloquent, but overblown for a novel in which nothing happens--two pampered teenage girls (who nonetheless feel deprived because they aren't rich) gossiping and pining away for the perfect husband. That's the gist of the book.I loved Emma Thompson's screenplay of Sense and Sensibility; by comparison the novel went down like a piece of dry, old wedding cake.

A highly underrated work of literature that I truly enjoyed. Although it does plod along at points, and is slightly dated, it's also extremely complex and offers more insight into the social enviroment (past and present) than the casual reader might observe at first glance. I highly recommend the Penguin Classics edition, with it's deeply insightful afterword.

I didn't know there were so many differences with the movie but it was a nice journey to discover so. I love the Jane Austen-books and Sense and Sensibility is no exception.

A must read if you are a literature freak! A must read if you just like Jane Austen! A must read if you are indeed into love novels! My review: 3/5 for easy reading 4/5 for general readers to appreciate the book 5/5 as I truly enjoyed reading this masterpiece

Is this the one where there is a kind of spoiled girl and another girl who is the model of a young lady and they both learn something about themselves and marry the person you never thought they would marry, but are glad they marry him because he is not secretly a scoundrel who flirts or spends too much money on things...or is that every jane austen book ever written. I liked the one with the navy officers in it, the father was funny in that one.

Love Austen (wrote my senior thesis on the possibility of feminism in her novels), but this one isn't my favorite. Marianne (?) is just too romantic. And she doesn't have the same lack of awareness that Lydia (Pride and Prejudice) has, so she just seems pitiful. And marrying her off to the elderly Captain who loves the PYT seems almost unfair to him.

it's nice to reread some of the books you read as a teenager. it gives you the opportunity to savour the nuances, so to speak. sense & sensibility, though always downplayed by most, is actually a very good read even if it's not Austen's best.

jane austen always reminds me of our culture maybe coz she proved that planned marriages and courtships arenot exlusively in the middle east countries and that women were treated everywhere as objects...and how shallow people used to be looking at marriage as the social mirror which refletcs their honor and pride
