Good characters and plot, but the most important character may be the English countryside and lifestyle. The woman can write!

It started off slow but then I could hardly put it down. It is an interesting story of how classes of people were treated differently about 200 years ago in England. It is also a story of great forgiveness.

This is my favorite work by George Elliot, more for the anti heroine, Hetty, whose attempt to escape the shackles of motherhood lead her to a tragic demise. There is also the theme of man-in-love-with-silly-woman instead of the strong intelligent heroine, but the book goes beyond practical moralizing and hits on exciting feminist themes.
